Those of you who follow me on any of my social media will know that last week I visited Amsterdam. It was my first time in the city and I must admit I came away with mixed opinions. On the one hand I loved the small, quirky and picturesque vibe that I got from the place, but I wasn’t so enamoured with the other side of things. It’s clearly a tourist city and as much as I was grateful for the amount of things that catered to the British, I also disliked them in equal measure. That said, I did have a really good time and I wanted to show you our trip to Amsterdam in photos. I love looking at others’ photo diaries and many of you said they were your favourite travel posts to read in a recent Twitter poll, so here goes.
The canals were without a doubt one of the best things about the city. So gorgeous, great for orienting yourself when trying to find things and perfect for Instagram. Unfortunately Sam was poorly for most of our stay, meaning a lot of late starts and popping back to the hotel for naps. I didn’t mind this too much as I was quite happy to just make the most of some chillout time before heading back to work, and we just did a lot of walking by the canals.
We were staying near Rembrandt Square so most of the stuff we wanted to do was a short walk away. We didn’t actually make it to Dam square until we’d been there a couple of days but I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be so big. I will admit that was my least favourite part of town as I found it too commercial in some respects, but the square itself was stunning. How could you not fall in love with the palace?
On our last day we took a walk to Anne Frank’s house which was so packed with people queuing to get in. We already knew we couldn’t book in advance as we’d checked online but I was still shocked with the amount of people that were waiting.
The area surrounding Anne Frank’s house was one of the prettiest parts of the city we explored. I think it also helped that we visited on a sunny day as the rest of our trip had been quite overcast and very cold. As it was our last day I tried to take as many photos as possible. I definitely wish I’d taken more throughout our stay.
One thing I also wish we’d done is rented some bikes. They are literally everywhere in Amsterdam, but I haven’t ridden one in years so was dubious. There also didn’t seem to be much distinction between pedestrian/bike/car areas on a lot of the roads which put me off even more. The amount of near-accidents we saw was ridiculous!
I hope you liked this quick little photo diary. It seems like the world and his wife are in Amsterdam at the moment so link me to your posts about your trip if you’ve been, I’d love to read them!
