Getting your blog to stand out from the crowd is a tricky task. It’s something I’ve battled with time and time again, and I’m still not remotely near to figuring out. However, standing out is important for getting noticed. It’s important for gaining followers. It’s important for being heard. So, I’m going to share a few tips I’ve learned to help make your blog stand out. If you’ve got any more suggestions I’d love to hear them, so leave them in the comments!
Get a blog design that reflects who you are and what you post
I’ve always said that you don’t need a fancy blog template or theme to have a good blog. I stand by that fact, but your design should always reflect you. The clean, white layout is a huge thing at the moment, but don’t feel like you have to follow this to fit in. Whilst having an easy to navigate, simple layout will make your blog appeal to a lot of readers, if it doesn’t reflect you or your content, what’s the point?
I recently invested in a theme which has a separate front page and blog, and I bloody love it. I feel like I can show off my assets on the front page to new readers who can then navigate themselves around depending on their interests. A lot of my content is what I would consider ‘evergreen’ so having the option for people to find some of my older posts straight of the bat is a really important tool for me.
Brand yourself well
I mentioned in my 2017 blogging goals post that I wanted to solidify my brand this year. You can do this in a number of ways, but having consistent branding across all your social channels and blog is a good place to start. Get a recognisable logo and put it everywhere. Use the same photo (or photos from the same shoot) in your profile pictures so that you are instantly recognisable. Post about a certain number of topics and stick to them. The last one may seem restricting, but it doesn’t have to be if you choose your topics wisely. For example, mine are bullet journalling, blogging and lifestyle, which gives me a pretty broad range to write about!
Let your personality shine
This is probably something I’m trying the most to work on in 2017, but letting your personality come through in your posts is really important. Whether this means writing a personal post once in a while, or just trying your best to get your point across in a humourous/exciting way, your audience need to connect with you to come back. You can also let your personality shine through with your photography by including yourself in photos or choosing colours that match the tone of your blog.
Post shareable content
This is definitely not necessary if it goes against what you usually blog about, but sometimes just tailoring a title to make it more shareable can work in your favour. I’m not talking about clickbait here necessarily, but asking a question instead of making a statement can get people thinking. Use exciting imagery to go alongside your posts, and make sure you have sharing buttons in place for readers to use.
I hope these four tips will help you make your blog stand out a little more. Do you do anything I’ve missed? Be sure to let me know!
