The blogging community is all about sharing posts and engaging with others, but so often I see bloggers admitting that they don’t actually read anyone else’s posts. I’m definitely guilty of only reading my favourites and ignoring a lot of others, so today I wanted to talk about the benefits of reading blogs as well as writing your own.
1. Post inspiration
Stuck for post ideas? Get inspiration from reading other blogs. If you can find people in your niche this is more useful, but sometimes just reading anything can get the creative mind working. I’m not talking about copying posts, but maybe a title or question will stir something in you. For example, maybe you’ve read a photography tips post that’s missed out some things you think you can contribute to. You could even link to the original post to give them more traffic, and acknowledge that their ideas helped inspire yours.
2. To build relationships
Reading blogs alone won’t help build relationships, but commenting will. We all love comments as they let us know that people are engaging with what we’ve written, so leave an inspired comment of your own! This can really help build relationships and make you feel part of a community. This is one of my favourite parts of blogging but one I don’t always make time for. It’s also nice to follow people on Twitter/Instagram, like their Facebook page etc. if you’re really feeling the love.
3. To suss out the competition
Whilst I don’t think you need to read others blogs as a blogger, how else are you going to find out what works? What could take a lot of trial and error for you could perhaps be found by just reading already existing blogs. It’s also a great way of seeing who is posting what in your niche and what kind of things you could be covering. Of course, blogging isn’t really a competition (although I do have an upcoming post all about that) but there is an element of being relevant in terms of what is already out there.
4. They’re helpful
There are so many reasons to read a blog post, but above all you click on something that you think will be useful to you. Maybe you’ll learn something about photography or growing a following that you didn’t know before. Maybe you’ll discover new books to read, music to listen to or places to visit, which can be pretty cool.
Do you read other blogs or are you guilty of just writing posts for your own? I’d love to know any other reasons you have for reading other blogs, so make sure to let me know!
