When it comes to my hair, I’m not exactly known for putting a lot of effort in. I used to have really long hair that was lucky if it was brushed in the morning, though now it’s a little shorter I do have to make a slightly more effort! My day-to-day hair mainly just consists of straightening out the kinks but occasionally I go for something a little fancier. Enter: the top knot.
I first started experimenting with top knots around a year ago, when I watched a Zoella video including them in an easy hairstyle roundup and I thought I may as well try it out for myself. They’re quite hit-and-miss for me; some days I’ll get it right first time and others (like when I was doing my hair for this post) it takes me a good few tries to get it right.
Regardless of how long they may or may not take to do, it’s still my go-to hairstyle for day or night. I’ve alluded to my love of casual, low-maintenence hairstyles, and to me this look embodies that. It’s casual if you want it to be, but you can also dress it up should you wish. For me, this is a simple hairstyle that takes ten minutes tops after straightening. You can use as much or as little hair as you like and it looks slightly different every time. It seems to work better for me the more hair I use, but everyone’s different!
So, how do you dress a topknot for the evening? Whilst sleek, straight hair is my fave during the day, there’s nothing I love more than bouncy curls on a night out. With a top knot though, I think simple waves really stand out without being too OTT. You can create waves really easily with straighteners – mine are the ghd Platinum Styler* – and it always amazes me how quick this look comes together.
I usually start at the front of my head and regret it when I come to the back, but you can pretty much grab any section of hair you like and get curling. Just go to straighten your hair from the top as normal, but twist your hair around the straighteners as you drag them down. It might take a couple of tries to perfect it, but it’s super easy once you get the hang of it. Just look at those *so profesh* photos above!
Once you’re done, you’ll have an effortless-looking hairstyle which will stay in place all evening, and won’t have taken you hours to perfect. More time for cocktails am I right?
Let me know what your favourite day to night hairstyle is. Are you also a fan of the topknot?

Shoutout to my mum for taking these photos (even if I did make fun of some of the outtakes on Twitter). You da bomb.
