Setting realistic New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions aren’t for everyone. I always set myself a few goals, but I rarely make them work. I always thought that was a ‘me’ problem, but I’ve come to realise maybe it’s the way you set the goals that determine whether or not you can achieve them. This year, I’ve tried to be more realistic with my goals. I’ve made them specific, with achievable time frames, and worked out ways of breaking them down into smaller goals where necessary.

The only real goal I achieved from my 2017 resolutions was to ‘excercise more’. Considering I did zero excercise at the start of last year, this should have been a pretty easy one to achieve. In around August this year, I joined the gym and started going around three times a week. Towards the end of the year I was lucky if I was going once a week, so whilst I did technically achieve my resolution, it’s not exactly something I’m proud of. This year, my fitness goals are to lose around a stone so I’m back at my comfortable size, start practising yoga and to do more fitness classes at the gym, where I want to go at least once a week. I feel like these are more realistic and have more purpose than my measly attempt at holding myself accountable last year.

My other main goal is the usual ‘stop biting my nails’. But this goal has been on my list since I can remember, so it clearly needs a switch up. I want to always have nicely painted nails first and foremost, as a deterrent from biting them. I feel like ‘stop’ is such a negative word to have at the start of a resolution, and to be honest as soon as I fall off the bandwagon I tend to have a reaction of ‘ah well, better luck next time’ and then end up biting them all short again. This year I’m going to try not to be so hard on myself if I mess up occasionally, but just try and keep my hands looking as nice as possible at all times.

Some other goals are to have a completely cruelty-free makeup bag by this time next year, to try and cut down on my meat intake (maybe doing meatless Mondays or something along those lines) and to use less plastic. I also have a couple of financial goals and of course some blogging goals which I’ll probably do a separate post on at some point.

This post has ended up being a bit rambly but to be honest I just wanted to sit and write. I’ve been getting in such a creative rut lately with my blog and Instagram that I just wanted to write something off the cuff and not worry about stats and promo and everything. Hopefully this way of working with follow me into 2018 – I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
