Writing about my blogging goals has become a bit of an annual tradition here on Lazy Thoughts. This year I thought I’d mix things up a bit and add everything I could possibly think of into one mega post. Hope you’re ready for it. I’ll be looking at my blog stats for 2017, reviewing how my 2017 goals panned out and setting some more for 2018. Hope you enjoy!
Whilst I take a look at my stats each month, I’ve never done a proper look at the year before and I’m pleasantly surprised. I had 110k pageviews in 2017, which isn’t too shabby! This is actually down on 2016, but not by much. You can see the massive spike I had in 2016, which was thanks to a post going somewhat viral on Pinterest. I was never going to be able to maintain that volume of traffic though, and I think 2017 has been much more consistent as a result.
My goals for the year were a little optimistic but I knew that when I set them, calling them “quite ambitious“. That turned out to be an understatement, and I’ve not hit a single one of the blogging goals I set. It was pretty obvious that would be the case when I reviewed these goals in July but I was still quietly hopeful. Then Instagram’s algorithm turned to pure shit, everyone stopped using Bloglovin’ and I still wasn’t interesting enough on Twitter. So here’s how I did with my goals.
791/1000 followers on Bloglovin’ (+125)
3117/5000 followers on Twitter (+1173)
1147/1500 followers on Instagram (+457)
Pretty crap, right? Instagram was somehow my biggest grower, and I gained an average of 1.25ish followers a day, but I’ve been stuck around the 1,100 mark since around August so it’s kind of bittersweet. Twitter is similarly a bit of a shambles, but like I hinted above, I’m not sure I’m interesting enough on there. I don’t often tweet anything that isn’t a reply to someone else or promo content, so I need to up my game if I’m going to grow more I think. I hinted towards that in my December blog and social stats post, in that I think I just need to work on my overall engagement.
The year ahead
Okay, on to the fun stuff: 2018. I feel like it’s so easy to sit here in January and outline all the things you want to achieve with the next 12 months and forget that you’re actually going to have to work really hard for the next year to make any of your plans happen. With that in mind, I’m still going to aim high, but I’m also going to review these goals in a few months time and see how realistic they’re going to be.
- I want to create monthly/bi-monthly content for my newsletter
- I want to feature myself more prominently on my blog/Instagram
- I want to write at least 1 post per week
- I want to be more creative with my photography
- I want to reach 5,000 Instagram followers
- I want to reach 10,000 Twitter followers
- I want to get 150,000 pageviews in 2018
The last three in particular are pretty big goals compared to where I’m currently at, but I don’t want to half-ass it. If I give myself a 5,000 Twitter goal I’ll get complacent. If I set the bar high, I’ll have to work hard. Keep all your fingers crossed for me and feel free to chuck any advice my way on growing an engaged Twitter following. How do you all do it?
